By filming there, the film-makers kept the final budget at $60 million. The project would not have been green-lit by Warner Bros. otherwise, because The Matrix would have cost a record $180 million for a U.S.-based production. The location scouts found it difficult, however, to find American-looking places in Sydney that showed urban decay, so many of the exterior locations had to be created from scratch. Here's another piece of trivia: All the color blue was sucked out of the exterior shots to convey the grimness of the computer-generated dream world of The Matrix.
